How do I reference using the Harvard Referencing Style?

To reference in Harvard style, we recommend using the TAFE Queensland Harvard Referencing Guide.

The guide is organised with tabs on the left side of the page.  These tabs help you find specific information based on the type of resource you need to reference such as books, journal articles or websites.

The guide also includes clear examples for formatting your Reference List and In-Text citations.

The main thing to remember is that referencing has four main elements, the 4 W's (who, when, what, where):

  • Who wrote it (author)

  • When was it written (date) or n.d. if no date

  • What is it called (title of book, image, website)

  • Where (where did you get it from, URL or publisher details if a physical item)

If you have questions about referencing, help is available in a range of formats:
